Our Menus

At Vallum we make a huge effort to source ingredients locally.  We serve excellent breakfasts from 10am with sausage, bacon, beans, tomato, black pudding, fried bread and fried egg.  Our lunch menu runs from 11.45 and the kitchen closes at 3pm.  After this time we serve a cracking Afternoon Tea on traditional tea stands, making the most of our award winning home baking!

We have a wide variety of locally inspired dishes on our menu.  Our 'signature' dishes would be the Bywell Smokery Slate and the Ploughmans lunch.

Bywell Smokery Slate

We love the produce from our very own smokery on the farm.  Run by Bernard Lynch, he offeres everything from scallops to venison.  The 'smokey slate', as our staff have nicknamed it, showcases Bywell Smokery's hot smoked chicken, hot and cold smoked salmons and smoked brie.  They are served with a wedge of our homebaked bread, dill sauce from The Herb Patch at Ebchester and a side salad, sourced from our own fields in the summer months.

Ploughmans Lunch Board

This is the most popular dish we serve.  Presented on its own chopping board you can sample our sugar and clove-baked ham, free range egg from Kearsley Farm nearby, pickled beetroot from our land, Northumbrian cheeses and side salad sourced from the vegetable fields when in season.  Our home baked bread sets the board off a treat!

Sandwiches, Panini, Salads

We offer the usual variety of sandwich fillings with guest fillings making an appearance according to seasonality.  In the winter you will often find hot beef rolls on the menu, served in a soft bap and dripping with gravy.

Our most popular salad is our home roasted ham and egg salad, served with our home made chutney.

Quiches and Pies

Quiche is another one of those dishes that ties together the best of local.  We even won a 2 star Gold Taste Award for our Quiche Lorraine in 2011.  Using our home made pastry, local eggs, milk, cream then a selection of seasonal variations, including the wonderful hot smoked salmon quiche, this is another best seller at Vallum.  We offer a pie most days, served with veg and gravy in the winter or salads in the summer.

Cakes, Tray bakes and Deserts

We do not buy anything in at Vallum.  Everything is home made, mostly by our resident baker Gill Kemp.  She has won numerous Gold Taste Awards, most recently for her Gingerbread, Belgian Triple Chocolate Brownie and Quiche Lorraine.

Our regular cakes include Coffee & Walnut, Chocolate, Orange and Carrot cake.  Traybakes might include Apple and Cinnamon slice, coconut and cherry slice (gluten free) and Malteser slice.  Our Scones are amazing.  We sell more of them per head than any other item on our menu and make sure we have a regular supply of frozen scones for our customers to take home!
