my sister has a few random peas left in her garden .. phoebe and i ate all ours.

eating peas in the garden reminds my sister and me of uncle frank's.  he was our grandpa's brother and he never married.  all his effort went into his garden.  you would find him on a little stool with a small knife, going round his lawn .. weeding.  you can barely find a blade of grass in my lawn!  his apple trees stood head height and only ever had about 7 apples on them .. but they were perfect apples.  we would sneak round under the bird netting to eat raspberries and the greatest delight of all was .. the PEAS.  he would let us eat until we got distracted onto something else.

now, in my own adulthood, the only thing i have had any success in growing up at slaley is .. peas and lettuce.  i did once have peas and lettuce as a side dish in london and it was delicieux!! a french recipe.

we have just been eating the last of the ropey old peas up at whittonstall .. still a thrill.  and unearthing potatoes that have self seeded from last year ('the best crop we have ever had!').

next year i am growing peas and lettuce.  and this year i am going to put all the self seeded oregano in pots and give it away at vallum.  it grows like stink!
