North Country Organics, one of our tenant artisan producers at Vallum, has branched out into salad production.
Ken and Tracy Holland have built a poly tunnel beside our Ice Cream Parlour and Tea Room car park .. to grow baby leaves.
The idea meshes perfectly with their current seasonal production, keeping them busy inside in the winter when the land is often too wet or frozen to do much with.
We have been enjoying all their winter veg including carrots, leeks, red cabbage, swede, celeriac, potatoes and more. We just pop up to their unit and raid their supplies of freshly havested produce. The Sunday Lunches are so colourful and we have never tasted carrots like it!
Now we will be able to wander into their poly tunnel and plunder their growing leaves, varieties of which are too numerous to remember .. never mind mention!
Will try to let you know when the leaves mature in around 6 weeks' time. I think they will be selling to customers as well as trade and i know they have plans to grow herbs to sell to visitors this summer. Their PYO on the Wall will be running again from around June.
We are so happy to have put the snowy end to 2010 firmly behind us. 2011 is going to be a fun year!!
