Our local food is raised and grown by us and our Northumbrian neighbours, and depending on the time of day, you may see our producers at work and chefs from all over the country picking their own and placing their orders at the unique Vallum Kitchen Garden. The produce of Hadrian’s Wall country is served in our Tea Room and Ice Cream Parlour and at the David Kennedy Restaurant and Shop. Our ice cream is made from the milk of our Brown Swiss cows, and our vegetables are grown on the Vallum Kitchen Garden. Enjoy homemade bread and patisserie, and take home a treat from the shop.
There are few better things than relaxing with a cuppa and a homemade cheese scone on our south-facing deck overlooking the outdoor play paddock. We have a small indoor pre-school play area with space for parents to relax, and gentle wildlife walks where you can spot a variety of nesting birds guided by our information boards.

Join Ken Holland – supplier of heritage and micro-veg and baby leaves to leading chefs nationwide – in his Vallum Kitchen Garden to find out about growing, forcing and baby leaf production. This seasonal course runs year round and included poly tunnel techniques, variety advice and more.

The David Kennedy at Vallum Shop is a destination in its own right. The introduction of the Communal Dining Table has caused a buzz with visitors, you can enjoy a morning coffee with Murray’s patisserie or a light lunch straight from the kitchen.
The shop is a haven for visitors, renowned for the unique range of artisan breads, cakes and patisserie which emerges daily from Murray Rhind’s Cow Barn Bakery; for the local cheese, deli goods, pots, pans, wines and beers selected by shop manager Ginny McKidd – a woman with a talent for seeking out the unique, the unusual and the downright fabulous; for the pies and the like handmade by David Kennedy; and for the fish smoked here by Bernard Lynch at the Bywell Smokery in our old tractor sheds. The Shop is light, airy and different every day, thanks to Ginny’s specialist sourcing powers and whatever happens to be taking Murray and David’s fancy. Ginny will launch her Cheese and Wine Matching Experience in June 2013 – meanwhile, please say hello to her in the shop, and tell her if there’s anything you fancy finding there.
Youngsters love Vallum for its outdoor play paddock with its chunky climbing frames, swings and slide, for the Ice Cream Parlour indoor pre-school play corner for rainy days and – most importantly – for its ice cream!
We have 16 different flavours available every day,which means there’s something for everyone. Combine all this with a party table laden with treats and the birthday boy or girl’s best friends, party games and lots of fun, our party goers always go home happily exhausted. Since we opened the Tea Room in 2005, our home baking has won many Great Taste Awards, our breakfast has been voted best in the county by members of TasteClub, and our Sunday lunch has been voted Extremely Highly Recommended by Your Northumberland. The menus at Vallum Tea Room star our homemade cakes, meat, fish and game from the on-site Bywell Smokery and heritage vegetables grown and hand-picked by Ken and Tracy Holland on the Vallum Kitchen Garden you can see from the Tea Room windows and south-facing deck. Our award-winning ice cream served in the Ice Cream Parlour is truly local, made here on site from the milk of the Vallum Herd – the only Brown Swiss cows in the area. Our ice cream counter holds 16 homemade flavours and our sundaes menu grows every summer. A favourite is the Chocolate Brownie Sandwich with chocolate sauce, and our traditional Knickerbockerglory and Banana Split have customers returning from far afield. The Ice Cream Parlour houses a small toddler area with a mini-kitchen and pots and pans to keep the little ones busy while the adults enjoy a bit of peace.
Breakfasts are a speciality and are served 10am-11.15am Mon-Sat. Lunch is served noon-3pm, and Sunday roast is served noon-2.30pm. Our popular Afternoon Tea is served all day, every day, because our customers can’t get enough of it!
Bernard Lynch’s smokery was named in the UK top 5 by The Daily Telegraph recently and his meat, fish and game is smoked traditionally and to perfection. A true artisan producer, Bernard is open on Fridays at Vallum and can also be found at Hexham Farmers’ Market on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. The new David Kennedy at Vallum shop is now selling a range of Bernard’s produce seven days a week and keen anglers can take advantage of Bernard’s bespoke smoking service. David Kennedy is one of the UK’s renowned chefs, known for his passion for robust, local produce. A former North East Chef of the Year, the David Kennedy Restaurant, Function Room and Shop at Vallum is dedicated to superb produce, the majority sourced from our site and from artisans within Vallum’s own postcode. David is rearing his own cattle and pigs to stock the shop and his kitchen, while his artisan baker, Murry Rhind, is here from the early hours every day stocking the shop and restaurant with his amazing breads and patisserie. David is working hand in hand with on-site producers including Ken Holland at the Vallum Kitchen Garden and Bernard Lynch of Bywell Smokery. We’re planning food workshops, bakery classes and master classes and the David Kennedy at Vallum function room is now available for hire for private events and weddings.

Our garden is renowned nationwide for its heritage and micro varieties. The Kitchen Garden poly tunnels are thriving despite the winter cold, you can take a peep as the team work their magic if you would like to wander down.
Inspired by the natural texture and movement of flowers, foliage and herbs, Hannah creates arrangements that fit perfectly into the natural landscape of Vallum. A truly talented and creative florist, Hannah guides all her clients personally, and works closely with brides to ensure the flowers reflect the mood and style of the wedding day. Hannah is available for small arrangements and displays as well as larger events.

We work with Walton’s Marquees to create a unique event for your wedding day. There are various options for on site catering ranging from a hog roast by Grants Butchers and a salad bar to a waitressed sit down menu by David Kennedy.

Vallum is home to Robert Grant’s butchery and shop. Robert’s meat and 100-plus varieties of sausage are justly renowned up and down the country. You can find Robert at Country Fairs from Edinburgh to Norfolk and his produce is available to mail order on http://www.grantsbutchers.co.uk/about-grants/

We are very excited about our ‘Family Fun Day’ which is on the 12th April between 10.30am – 3.00pm. There will be Kids kitchen workshops with pizza making, ice cream making, biscuit decorating and Easter egg hunts.

The tea room has a new Apple and Cider Cake on sale which is currently our cake of the month! It tastes delicious and is selling out fast! It smells gorgeous and it is lovely and moist. We have had a taste test just now here at Vallum HQ and it definitely gets 10/10 from us! Well done to Gill our baker who made this gorgeous nectar! This is what is left of it today…Mmmm! Yummy!
Our new recipe of the month is Lamb and Mango curry from the BBC Food Calendar and is also on the specials board.

Robert, the butcher here at Vallum is going from strength to strength with a wide range of different produce. His produce is used in the gorgeous baked goods at the David Kennedy stall at Tynemouth Market every Saturday and Sunday! Get yourselves there. They sell out very quickly!

The next Ladies Lunch at David Kennedy at Vallum Restaurant is on March 25th. These special monthly events include a food demo from Dave himself and a lovely three-course lunch at the restaurant, which enjoys gorgeous views over Hadrian’s Wall Country. The March event is veggie-themed, as is fitting considering that the restaurant’s picture windows look out over the Vallum Kitchen Garden. A wonderful time was had by all when we welcomed TV presenter and all-round good egg John Grundy at Vallum on February 20th and 21st.
Known for his wicked sense of humour, Grundy was at the Tea Room on both mornings to regale us with entertaining tales of his journeys through Northumberland while compiling his What’s Special About guided tour CDs. A welcome drink and a wonderful Northumbrian finger buffet were included in the £10 ticket price.
Farmhouse Breakfast Week is on (Sun Jan 26 – Sat Feb 1), so what better excuse for an award-winning Vallum Northumbrian breakfast, which we’re serving with a free tea or coffee all this week?
For those of you still on your New Year health kick, we also have our very own Vallum yoghurt and granola pots available for a virtuous breakfast or snack.

Burns Night was a huge success at David Kennedy at Vallum, where a piper and Ceilidh added to the atmosphere enjoyed by a full house.
David’s special menu included Smoked haddock & potato soup, parsley & lemon, Haggis, neeps & tatties (naturally), Overnight braised beef, smoked bacon, Potato puree, red wine sauce, all followed by a Iced whisky parfait, salad of oranges, and honey madeleines.
