Come to Vallum and enjoy the produce of land once trod by the Roman auxiliaries who lived in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall. We farm dairy cattle and crops while our community of artisan growers, smokers, bakers, chefs and ice cream makers stock our Tea Room, Restaurant and Shop. Our local food is raised and grown by us and our Northumbrian neighbours, and depending on the time of day, you may see our producers at work and chefs from all over the country picking their own and placing their orders at the unique Vallum Kitchen Garden. Our programme of experiences and events is growing a pace, and visitors also enjoy our wildlife walks, the outdoor play paddock, and the fresh produce, deli goods, artisan breads and patisserie at David Kennedy’s shop. Vallum - home of the tastes of Hadrian's Wall country. -Vicky and Peter Moffitt
The produce of Hadrian’s Wall country is served in our Tea Room and Ice Cream Parlour and at the David Kennedy Restaurant and Shop. Our ice cream is made from the milk of our Brown Swiss cows, and our vegetables are grown on the Vallum Kitchen Garden. Enjoy homemade bread and patisserie, and take home a treat from the shop.
There are few better things than relaxing with a cuppa and a homemade cheese scone on our south-facing deck overlooking the outdoor play paddock. We have a small indoor pre-school play area with space for parents to relax, and gentle wildlife walks where you can spot a variety of nesting birds guided by our information boards.
Cook with former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy; make ice cream and create your own flavour combinations with Vicky; enjoy wine and cheese tastings with Ginny in the shop; and get your gardening gloves on in the Vallum Kitchen Garden with Ken. Watch our events page (below) for news of all our experiences and events.

The David Kennedy at Vallum Shop is a destination in its own right, for the unique range of artisan breads, cakes and patisserie which emerges daily from Murray Rhind’s Vallum Bakery; for the local cheese, deli goods, pots, pans, wines and beers selected by shop manager Ginny McKidd – a woman with a talent for seeking out the unique, the unusual and the downright fabulous; for the pies and the like handmade by David Kennedy; and for the fish smoked here by Bernard Lynch at the Bywell Smokery in our old tractor sheds. The Shop is light, airy and different every day, thanks to Ginny’s specialist sourcing powers and whatever happens to be taking Murray and David’s fancy. Ginny will launch her Cheese and Wine Matching Experience in June 2013 – meanwhile, please say hello to her in the shop, and tell her if there’s anything you fancy finding there.
Youngsters love Vallum for its outdoor play paddock with its chunky climbing frames, swings and slide, for the Ice Cream Parlour indoor pre-school play corner for rainy days and – most importantly – for its ice cream!

Tea Room & Parlour
Since we opened the Tea Room in 2005, our home baking has won many Great Taste Awards, our breakfast has been voted best in the county by members of TasteClub, and our Sunday lunch has been voted Extremely Highly Recommended by Your Northumberland. The menus at Vallum Tea Room star our homemade cakes, meat, fish and game from the on-site Bywell Smokery and heritage vegetables grown and hand-picked by Ken and Tracy Holland on the Vallum Kitchen Garden you can see from the Tea Room windows and south-facing deck. Our award-winning ice cream served in the Ice Cream Parlour is truly local, made here on site from the milk of the Vallum Herd – the only Brown Swiss cows in the area. Our ice cream counter holds 16 homemade flavours and our sundaes menu grows every summer. A favourite is the Chocolate Brownie Sandwich with chocolate sauce, and our traditional Knickerbockerglory and Banana Split have customers returning from far afield. The Ice Cream Parlour houses a small toddler area with a mini-kitchen and pots and pans to keep the little ones busy while the adults enjoy a bit of peace.
Breakfasts are a speciality and are served 10am-11.15am Mon-Sat. Lunch is served noon-3pm, and Sunday roast is served noon-2.30pm. Our popular afternoon teas is served all day, every day, because our customers can’t get enough of it!

Ken and Tracy Holland’s family veg business, North Country Growers, is renowned nationwide for its heritage and micro varieties. Produce from their plot on the Vallum Kitchen Garden is used by many of the region’s and the UK’s best-known chefs and is served in our Tea Room and David Kennedy at Vallum Restaurant. Always up for a (long) chat about his produce, Ken is often seen atop John Moffitt’s vintage Dexter tractor on his Vallum plot. The Kitchen Garden poly tunnels and raised beds are thriving in the paddock and you can watch Ken work his growing magic from the Tea Room and Restaurant windows. After the success of our first marquee wedding for 220 happy guests, we got a taste for weddings here at Vallum, and it seems the region’s brides and grooms have, too. We hosted a popular wedding fayre in February, and couples keen to put together a memorable country wedding are now booking here for 2013 and 2014. David Kennedy and his amazing team can cater for small weddings in their function room to large marquee weddings on our south-facing paddock. We have a wonderful florist on site, a vegetable grower, a smokery and an ice cream laboratory, plus you can have a hand in creating your own bespoke menu. as David always says, Vallum’s wedding menus, at the outset, are simple – ie, a blank sheet of paper. There are no rules, no limited package A, B, or C, and no limits apart from the imagination. Your first point of contact for weddings at Vallum is the David Kennedy team. Please email Steve Cairns at firstname.lastname@example.org
Peter’s father, John Moffitt, was a great collector and record keeper. At one time he had one of the most well-known tractor collections in the UK and many of his dairy archives are now at Woodhorn. We no longer have all the big tractors but John left a legacy of model tractors as well as a beautiful 100-year-old fully working Ivel tractor. It was the first tractor to be made with a petrol-driven engine. At present, the Mini-museum is open on request, so please phone or email us and let us know when you are coming. We are currently curating the collection of models and the Ivel takes pride of place.

We ‘re all looking forward to meeting the Hebridean lambs when Patrick and Paula Coulson bring their flock to meet our customers between noon-3pm.
The Coulsons are set to be regular visitors with a small flock in the paddock next to the entrance. They are a little smaller than most sheep and so pretty. Paula can tell you all about this special breed and you can listen to their lovely lamb chatter. Thank you Patrick and Paula!
